Martos Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to present Label The Shapes, a solo exhibition of new work by Agnes Lux on view from March 25 – April 25 with an opening reception on Wednesday, March 25 from 6 – 8 pm.
In an ongoing body of work, Lux compiles grids of ready-to-send postcards embellished with patterns of copper leaf and graphite, which she sends to herself through the U.S. post office. Elements become left to chance—corners are bent, copper leaf flakes, graphite smudges, and surface is abraded as the material is circulated through the exchange of the post office to produce an artwork that is individually and collectively made. When each altered card separately returns, Lux reassembles them to generate a myriad of repeated forms and textures that evoke the boundless arrangements of binary code and encryption programs. The result is a poetic ornamentation of everyday life that reflects on shifting modes of communication as each work functions with a visceral transience, projecting geographical routes and recollecting passages of time.
Lux has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. She lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
