Jean-François Lauda
Jean-François Lauda’s marks are soothingly efficient, his color logic displayed between subdued pastels and rich earth tones. He scratches numerous compositional itches, leaving viewers to satiate over vast fields of minimalist-leaning abstraction. Pools of aura are decorated with spurts of energized brushwork and carefully executed geometries. Importantly though, the artist doesn’t enact any preconceived formulas, but follows the paths that emerge from spontaneous mark-making. These works accumulate gestures, leavened by way of Lauda’s intuitive command of shape and color. Small watercolors are conceived as intimate windows into his larger nonrepresentational paintings, paring them down into formally masterful capsules.
