Works on Paper
Gengoroh Tagame
May 30 - June 15, 2013
Opening reception: Thursday May 30, 6-8

Bondage, sadomasochism, torture, humiliation: a realm of hard-core skirting the darkest corners of sexually charged desire. It all comes to life in the unmatched comics and artwork of Gengoroh Tagame.

This exhibition presents 20 original drawings by the artist from the last decade of his work. Here are traditional Japanese ink and brush stand-along drawings, along with ink-on-board pages from his comics, including the stories "Country Doctor", "Exorcism", and "Arena". All of this work is being exhibited in the United States for the first time.

Tagame is known the world throughout as the Tom of Finland of Japan. In Japan his visionary work in BDSM-oriented hard-core comics is not simply admired by a pre-determined audience but has paved the way for most all of today’s Japanese gay manga artists. As a figurehead, the impact Tagame’s prolific career has had on local gay media and culture cannot be overstated.

Gengoroh Tagame: Works on Paper is presented in conjunction with the new book from PictureBox, "The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic Manga".
